Welcome to The Cennea Thorla Guidry Scholarship Foundation Mother's Day Auction! In honor and memory of my sister, Cennea Thorla Guidry, this 501(c)(3) nonprofit charitable foundation provides educational scholarships to domestic abuse survivors, including children living in domestic violence shelters or other such programs, seeking to further their educations. 

Cennea was murdered on January 7, 2001 while in the process of leaving an abusive marriage. She was only 29 years old. No one has ever been arrested for her murder. As Cennea was preparing for a new life with her two young children, she was particularly excited about the possibility of going to school so she could be more independent and better able to provide for her kids.

Recognizing her unrealized dreams, The Cennea Thorla Guidry Scholarship Foundation provides financial assistance for people in domestic violence shelters or other transitional living programs furthering their educations. The Foundation focuses on supporting survivors who have demonstrated a commitment to building a life free of their abusers. Funds are available for tuition and fees, as well as childcare, transportation and technology necessary for academic success. Education can be transformative to those in abusive situations, providing a measure of independence and financial security mostly unavailable to those without a trade, degree or career.

While this Foundation was started as a way to bring light from the darkness of her history as a domestic violence and murder victim, Cennea will never be defined by her abuse to those who truly knew her. In fact, she remains a bright light in the memories of her family and friends. She was fun and beautiful and incredibly alive. She was a fierce mother to her two children and had dreams she believed in fully. For these reasons, this foundation seeks to memorialize her with financial assistance to those who share her struggle.

 Taken from us at 29 years old, Cennea was unable to fully actualize her potential during her short life. It's not too late for us, though, who are moved by her story, who knew and loved her. We can support others in similar situations have different endings to their stories. Your donation helps transform an epic tragedy with reverberations to this day into opportunities for others.
